My boys were very fortunate to be a part of Karlyen's studio for a combined 8 years.  She is an amazing teacher and a master of her craft!  Karlyen possesses a unique combination of expertise as a pianist and educator along with the utmost care and concern for her students.  My boys have different learning styles and abilities and she effortlessly adapted her teaching method from one lesson to the next to match their needs.  With her kindness, patience, and expertise, she draws the best out of her students.  She is the most dedicated teacher I have known.  It was a privilege to be part of her musical family!

When I was eight years old, I started learning how to play the piano with Karlyen Tan. I was shy, reserved, and a little nervous starting lessons. However, through Karlyen's kindness, compassion, and patient temperament, I discovered an unconditional love for music and piano. It helped me express myself, and I was given many opportunities to play beautiful music for many audiences. With Karlyen's passion, perseverance and phenomenal teaching skills, I had gained confidence and fervor within myself I never would have found without her. This year is my eleventh and final year of piano with Karlyen. It has changed my life, and I will go on to get a BA in music degree at the University of Utah, something I couldn't have done without her help. Her influence on me has been the most positive and rich experience, and I will always cherish the things she has taught me for the rest of my life. Thank you so very much Karlyen, I love you.

Karlyen Tan is piano instructor extraordinaire! Karlyen has given my sons an excellent musical education. She has instilled in them the confidence to perform well. She prepares her students thoroughly for performances: they know precisely how to recover when facing a hiccup while performing. My oldest son has the gift of music for life. Now in early adulthood, after many years with Karlyen, he plays for pure enjoyment. More than once, I have looked at the new music that comes home and wondered how one son or the other could learn the difficult piece. The challenge, coaching, and the care are all there on Karlyen’s part; at the same time, she is aware of her student's capacity and she helps them tackle challenging music. One of Karlyen’s greatest qualities is the nurturing she gives her students. Karlyen’s devotion to her students is breathtaking. I am deeply grateful for the musical life Karlyen has given my two sons.

My son, Steven, was fortunate to study piano under Karlyen for about five years, until he graduated out of her program this Spring at age 18. She is an exceptional teacher and a lovely, genuine person. She sets high standards for her students and at the same time, she is kind, patient and enthusiastic. Her attention to detail regarding every aspect of the music, including technique and musicality, benefits the student in learning their pieces as well as at recitals and competitions. Steven greatly excelled under Karlyen's direction and also developed a special bond and friendship. Samantha and Elliott have been blessed with learning piano from Karlyen from when they were 5 and 6 respectively. She is a wonderful teacher: patient, devoted and knowledgeable, always encouraging and pushing her students to go as far as they can. She really helps them to understand the musicality and expressions of the music and with their performance at recitals and competitions. Our children have really flourished under her guidance and consistently played well during their performances. We respect her as a teacher and have cherished our friendship with such a dedicated teacher!
